Just a reminder that #Fedilab has a feature to detect the language of the message you are writing (disabled by default).
If you are a polyglot, it can warn you when you have selected the wrong language.
You can enable it in Settings > Compose > Check language when posting.
@curiousicae
It is possible, but it needs extra work to handle polyglot users who set more than one language in Fedilab. Otherwise, it would overload our server for nothing. Detection uses our privacy-friendly LibreTranslate instance (reserved for Fedilab users).
@apps
I see. It’s not really transparent that detection happens server-side...
@curiousicae
I wanted to do it on the device a long time ago, but it added more than 100 MB just for that feature.
But yes, it might need a disclaimer, even though everything is handled on our side without any data collection.
@apps Is there a setting to display only posts in my language?
@drreid
Yes, you can filter languages in the Mastodon web settings.
Marco
This would be a great feature for the web interface to have also.
Folks do seem to forget the language selection, or pick the wrong one which breaks translation 😔
@simonzerafa
True, it also breaks language filters.
@apps
Why is this disabled-by-default? I’m fairly certain I haven’t ever thought of changing the language manually when I posted in German...
