The right-wing owners of Scientific American, once the pillar of science writing, have ruined the publication's content and reputation. An incredibly sad situation: https://www.thenation.com/article/society/scientific-american-springer-nature-trump/
Unscientific American.
@dangillmor
I remember even in the 90s hearing things about Springer Verlag that made me go hmmmm but it was a more innocent time so I thought nah I'm just being paranoid and seeing Nazis everywhere
@dangillmor The new Newsweek of science
@dangillmor It’s definitely disappointing to see how much the landscape of science journalism has shifted in recent years. Quality, objective reporting is harder to come by.
@dangillmor I started subscribing to SciAm in 1984. That's 42 years. I still have every issue I've bought and read since then.
I'm currently catching up on a bit of a backlog -- I'm still in the Helmuth era right now. I'll be experiencing the last couple of years in accelerated time, and I'm not looking forward to it now.
I think I have another year or so of subscription to go. Based on this article, and some of the comments here, I may not be renewing.
@dangillmor The editors have ruined scientific American. I once had a subscription. I do not anymore because for many reasons. The final straw for me was when the magazine endorsed Biden. I didnt subscribe to figure out who to vote for, I subscribed to learn about what is going on in science. Today, when I want to learn about a subject, I buy the book written by someone who knows more than me to hear directly what they have to say. Yes, I have my opinion, but I still want to read what the author thinks.
@dangillmor started to read the linked article but the advertising made it impossible to continue.
@Heterokromia use an ad-blocker.
@dangillmor Americans have ceased being scientific.
I noticed the change after subscribing to them in instagram.
Very sad. Yet another publication zombified.
@dangillmor ...das war auch deren Aufgabe...mit Wissenschaft hatten diese Menschen nichts zu tun...
I think he would be the first to agree that the consolidation of publications into fewer and fewer hands into media empires has been an unalloyed disaster.
Voting the Republicans auto office isn’t enough. There must be immediate aggressive antitrust applied to all large corporations. Tech and media being the highest priority right now.
@dangillmor kinda dubious estimate of their previous status, but ok.
@dangillmor interesting, I'd been wondering why S.A. had seemed to turn political and rightward. I remember when they fired their editor Laura Helmuth (who is here in the fediverse)... it seemed out of character for them. Now it makes more sense. Very sad. 😥
@dangillmor Will not be renewing again. Honestly, I’d noticed there had been a distinct change in the articles and topics chosen. Also noted there were more short articles with simpler vocabulary and clickbait type titles and subheadings. Sigh.
