@liaizon In Gorom — 26km southwest of Juba — life for LGBTIQ refugees is described as one of the hardest in East Africa right now.

The camp was built for 2,500 people in 2010 but now has over 16,000 to 22,000 people after new arrivals from Sudan. LGBTIQ community there is estimated around 500-600 people, many who fled Uganda, Kenya (Kakuma), Rwanda, Burundi after persecution. 18de

Here is what LGBTIQ people report inside Gorom:

*1. Daily physical safety*
- Daily attacks, stoning, death threats, beatings by other refugees and host community
- Block leaders refusing to give food or threatening "leave or act straight"
- Couples forced to pretend to be siblings or sleep separately
- Women report having to sleep in turns, one keeping watch, because of rape threats 18defd3e

*2. No police protection*
- When they report to police, they are often mocked, harassed, or ignored. Activists reported "lack of police assistance" 18de

*3. Basic services denied*
- Denial of medical care — trans women mocked in clinic, told they are "possessed"
- HIV medication hard to get, with extra stigma
- No safe shelter — many sleep on bare ground, tents with 33 people in one, leading to malaria, pneumonia
- Children of LGBTIQ parents bullied or denied school and meals
- No jobs, so some forced into survival sex work, which brings more assault risk fd3e18de

*4. Law outside camp is also harsh*
- South Sudan itself criminalizes same-sex activity. Government officials have said publicly there are "no gay people in South Sudan". US State Dept reported security forces harass, arrest, beat LGBT persons. 8644

*5. Recent pressure to leave Gorom*
- In early 2025, authorities tried to make LGBTIQ refugees leave Gorom and move to Juba city without transport or housing, where they would have less UNHCR protection. 5bc9

*Why people still stay in Gorom:*
Most fled Kakuma in Kenya because life there became unbearable for LGBTIQ — shelters burned, daily attacks. Gorom was the only nearby alternative where UNHCR still registers them. 562d
