To use Meshtastic or MeshCore on the #WHY2025 badge, you have to solder bodge wires to the ESP32-C6 pins 5 and 12.

Which would be a pain already at 1.27 mm pitch, but pin 5 in particular is full of epoxy because of the whole battery debacle.

Nah, I'll pass.

Sooo … I'm in the market for a portable #LoRa device, and interested in your suggestions:

must:

• handheld
• comes with an antenna that's at least "pretty good", maybe even "great"
• reasonably waterproof ("can be used in rain" kind of thing)
• can connect an external antenna with no or only minimal soldering required
• < 100 €

nice to have:

• GNSS ("GPS")
• display
• replaceable battery

optional:

• GPIO, Qwiic or some other way to connect external stuff

I have this, which would seem to meet your criteria. Mine is the Meshcore version though they also sell one flashed for Meshtastic. And of course you can easily reflash either version so the only real difference is the logo on the case.

If you're in EU, be sure to order from the German warehouse.

@scy I had the same problem and had to scrape away the epoxy. Uncured epoxy had found its way into the keypad. My badge also randomly reboots, probably a bad solder connection somewhere. Shame for the #why2025 badge because it sure looked promising.
