What is a delicious way to use three white and purple turnips?
I don't like cooked veggies as much as fresh? Can I make a pickle or something?
I have some nice fragrant cheese, old bread, a tiny cabbage (it's so small my god) and other basics.
I've never really used a turnip before. I don't know what to do with them.
How big are they?
If they're large (and thus older) then yeah, you probably want to cook or pickle them. But if they're little, you can shave/shred them and use them in a salad. They might be kind of intense but with a good vinegar it can be good-intense.
They are smaller and fresh so I will take your advice and see what happens.
Just for reference, I would probably peel them myself (I'm a philistine and usually prefer to peel my root veggies), and the failure mode for turnips is sharp/bitter/sulfurous, like hot mustard, in case that's a real problem for you. I happen to kind of love it. But if you have any lettuce I would cut it with that for your salad just to dilute it a bit.
There must be turnip fans out there, right?
I've been told these are among the finest turnips that can be found ... anywhere. They do look very pretty.
@futurebird I don't often buy them, but I do like them. My favorite way to cook them (I know you said you preferred methods other than cooking, but...) is peeled, chunked, simmered til soft, then treated like mashed potatoes with butter and cream etc.
The turnip greens are also edible and good if you are into stewed greens (i love greens).
I had them pickled in the past but that is too far back for me to remember what kind of pickle they were in (sweet or not?)

I'm pretty sure I used to eat turnips raw as a child? I can't be sure though, we also had a thing that looked turnipy which was locally called a Swede?? I may be getting them mixed up.
@futurebird I mean, I like them cooked, too, but thin sliced and raw is lovely!
@futurebird I detest cooked turnip 😒 BUT, they are great raw, cut into sticks!
You can add dip!
I've had it cooked and all I remember is being so mad that it was NOT a potato.

@futurebird sure you can pickle them, you might look to Japanese cooking for ideas on that. My wife cooks them and serves them with miso butter and while I am not a big turnip fan, those are good.
