Lost mastodon.social on tuesday, lost google translate on wednesday. Now using awkward open-source workaround programs that make me accept limitations. I wonder what program I've been using for 10+ years I'll be stopping use of forever on Thursday.
@mcc That was one reason for me retiring.
It was no longer possible to write code, with or without AI, as 100% of one's time was spent version bumping things in response to CVEs.
Note: Of course CVEs and vuln patching are inevitable, I'm not trying to compare a need to patch servers to bad software updates. But the other way around yeah I am making a comparison, a bad auto update feels remarkably similar to finding out you're impacted by a CVE and rushing to find mitigations. That's weird.
I really am sincerely grateful to Mastodon that they gave us a one day warning the new interface was going to drop. I got to *choose what time on Monday* I was going to find an alternative client instead of waking up on Tuesday and oh, bam, social media app gave me homework, guess this is what you're doing with the next hour or two if you want to use social media today
@mcc since you have good taste in social media clients, can i ask what your new solution for desktop Mastodon is now? (perhaps you have already posted what it is but uh there has been a lot of Computer Kerfuffle in the past couple days so there’s a lot to sift through)
@mcc I am on the same boat. I am even looking at migrating away from Linux. I'm most likely headed to NetBSD, but I am also looking at OpenIndiana and Haiku
Like what's just really staggering about automatic updates world is how corporations give you homework. Did you have plans for today? No you didn't, you're dealing with this new update and/or looking for yet another alternative to a program because it autoupdated into uselessness. Combine that with this week's CVE scares and it's just like every few hours, drop everything and work on this piece of broken software. It's 8PM, disconnect your PHP server. It's 6AM, research Android translation apps.
