You know, I didn't really mind a whole lot when IRC first died off. Software projects and nerd groups can use the platform they want, they spread across mostly forums and blogs. Later reddit, which was unfortunately a bit too central, but oh well, I'll let it slide.
But these days I feel like I want to burn the internet down and drag everyone back to IRC even if I have to do so by force, every time I see a "Join our Discord server"
Unfortunately users have gotten too used to getting a billion features for free in a single central location which stays around for 10+ years. And that's simply not really feasible to finance after the investment money runs out without mass data harvesting (even then, often barely).
Users need to learn to either all pay for such services, or accept simpler services which can actually be maintained and hosted at a sustainable pace and cost.
The majority of users are entirely unwilling to do either however. So I struggle to imagine the internet healing much unless big tech companies get punished.
Discord is not yet public though, so we don't really know the details of what their revenue flow looks like.
Nerds might have lost a bunch of stuff due to everything being hosted on some random person's toaster. But lots survived due to being reuploaded and reposted all over across forums and websites, whether it was anime fansubs, linux tools, weird memes or fan-made games.
The past decade or two stuff got more centralized, but as long as we manage to crawl and archive swaths of reddit/youtube/whatever I think we'll manage.
However I dread how much stuff is doing to end up as lost media in the future, since the majority of it was simply posted "in a discord channel"
At least any major project should manage. For example Pokemon Infinite Fusion like any half-decent project still hosts everything in a public git repo behind the discord channel they present. And it's popular enough that it'd definitely end up preserved.
But I doubt all the smaller projects out there run by only a few people who post output in a discord channel will end up like that. If the people consuming it don't actively repost it elsewhere, it'll just disappear when the discord server rots, as crawlers and internet archivists can neither easily find it, nor necessarily reach it.
Meanwhile mirroring shit from the silos: LOL
I wish that existed a good alternative to discord but unfortunately all of them lacks some feature or is too complicated for the average joe to use
