Microsoft has been warehousing Nvidia rigs it doesn't have data centre power for since last year. Amazon admits it's doing the same:

this is for preferential deals with Nvidia so they don't get cut off

@davidgerard well I for one would like to run most of my Steam games in the super fancy shiny modes. (If anyone remembers that was the sole reason we bought Nvidia before the crypto and AI gifts came)
@dianshuo these cards do not run anything other than slopware, so you can't, actually, do that with them.
@davidgerard When I was a kid there used to be these fairground games where they'd have a load of plates lined up and you'd pay 10p for some blocks of wood to throw at them with the aim of breaking them. That. Possibly with heavier ordnance.

@davidgerard the prognosis doesn't seem good re: reusing them as general purpose or particularly gaming PCs. would be curious to hear from an expert on scientific computing if it looks any better from that field.
