A Great Horned Owl looks deeply affronted at being half-wrapped in a slate-blue towel and held by a rehabilitator. She has bright yellow eyes, shaped like Reuleaux triangles (think guitar picks) owing to the curve of her brow and rictal bristles. Multiple rows of windows, and even clouds and blue sky are reflected in each pupil. Her plumage is a mottled mix of calico colours: white, ginger, and dark-brown-to-black. Thick gloves the shade of turmeric are wrapped around her ankles. Wordlessly she says to the photographer, "The second I'm free, your life is forfeit."
