Maybe #WSocial is a secret project by Big Tech to stop me and other activists from promoting the open social web... distracting us with daily rage bait instead.
Incredibly, the W Social folks are boasting that they received an innovation award at a glitzy ceremony (the award was just created, its website went live last week).
If you didn't know, W Social grabbed the ATproto codebase (developed by Bluesky PBC) and quietly went closed-source, à la Truth Social.

@_elena it's like they're just fucking up any European initiatives meant to fight US monopolies just so people think less of Europe as an alternative and more just a side of the same coin.

@_elena TBH, I had that suspicion already with Bluesky itself. They lied from the beginning about ownership and funding and were just perfectly set up to take in the expectable influx from Twitter/X.
It just makes sense, to repeat that now and keep people from leaving Bluesky towards platforms, that can not be so easily controlled (aka the Fediverse).

@_elena Credo che sia molto difficile che la Commissione Europea o qualunque altro organismo politico entrino nel Fediverso, in quanto non è "controllabile" o "manipolabile" secondo i loro desideri. Infatti tutti questi tentativi di costruire nuove piattaforme, quando ce ne sono già di disponibili e funzionanti, sono il segno inequivocabile dei loro scopi. Che il Signore ti benedica e ti sostenga nella tua opera. Namasté 🙏

@david a ghost town yes, but populated by POWERFUL accounts like the European Commission, the European Parliament, Christine Lagarde, Ursula von der Leyen, Roberta Metsola... even writer Anne Applebaum is on there!!! This is precisely why I keep the pressure on them, dispelling myths and uncovering every technical mishap they have (they are MANY)
@_elena @david I'm reminded of how what3words initially utilised their founders contacts in music and then started to shove itself everywhere in the emergency services. To the point of ITV (UK television) gave them free advertising and also showcased them unofficially in Emmerdale (a soap opera)
I do wonder if there's more digging to do into the wider networks of w founders. Is it just that they flattered the EU so much at Davos, or does there need to be more scrutiny to see who else wants w?
@_elena To me the fact our public bodies like @EUCommission and the European Parliament (who at the same time decided not to set up shop on Mastodon / Fediverse, a place where European citizens actually are) set up shop on an absolutely unimportant commercial platform like W-Social still feels like a corruption scandal in the making.

@_elena I agree with you! We need more transparency and genuinely open social platforms, not just another corporate-controlled network wrapped in flashy awards and marketing. The open social web should be about user freedom, decentralization, and community—not corporate interests and distractions. 💯
