A few days ago we got an out of the blue offer from the mom of my gf..
A while ago they bought a massive plot of land and a house in Italie, they currently only use it for vacation and at some point they’re gonna move there
We got the offer to live there for free on their land for a few years so we could save up instead of starting from scratch each month
We still have to go there for a little vacation first but it’s certainly a massive chance!
And yes we know, our lives would turn 360😅

The idea is that we could live in a trailer ish on their property far away from their house so we both have our privacy
It’s basically what we live in now except the climate is a LOT better there so no cold winters at least

They live quite remote on a mountain ish top so quite beautiful
There is however no running water, no electricity, no internet etc so either solar panels, Starlink and a reservoir
The minimum distance to a store is only about 5KM though

@stux in most parts of Italy you can avoid Starlink even in remote areas. here we have a quite capillar Fixed Wireless Access service up to 100Mbps. probably not as fast as Starshit but 🤷🏻♂️ I'm on a 10Mbps FWA. where is this land located, northers, central, southern or insular Italy?
@stux I could not pack fast enough for this. If they need an onsite caretaker/maintenance I'd do it (been doing it for years now). The further, more remote, less contact I have with this world the happier I would be.
1x month go into town to get email. No phone even. Beautiful.

@stux are there any backup options if Starlink becomes unavailable? Musk is simply not trustworthy in any respect, and it's entirely possible he could randomly shut down service to the EU in a stupid attempt to apply leverage, just as he and the Orange Blight are doing to Ukraine ATM.
@stux ooh what part of Italy?? If you can make the internet situation work, and maybe figure out some proper plumbing.. That latter part would be tough for me, I'm not a roughing-it kind of person. But yes, it could be an incredible adventure and opportunity! and: ITALIA you know the food is gonna be great 😀

@stux See if there's a fixed-wireless operator there. A good directional antenna can give you pretty ridiculous range and bandwidth.

Do it! I just returned from Italy and it sure seems like a lot of it is really rugged and remote.
What surprised me most was how derivative much of America is from the way Italians do things. You can really see the influence of the Italian immigration early in the last century. Most of the big construction companies in California are old Italian names.
