Dishwasher failed seven weeks in. Turns out the filter just, like... Does not have a filter? You have to buy one separately? Cleared the pump, rerouted the high line, and cleared a blockage in the drain fitting as well. Dishwasher works now.
24 hours later, the oven caught fire. Heating element arced out, which I guess is a common failure mode in older ovens? I swear I'm cursed.
Finding a new range has turned into fourteen hours of research. It is impossible to get a downdraft induction range, and even if I go to resistive, there are only a couple manufacturers (like JennAir), and they changed where they route the exhaust! So I'd have to rip out the current exhaust line and cut a new hole in the floor then reroute the line. Decided to just live without any ventilation and use the windows. Fine.
Did I mention the counters are 37" and slightly out of plane?
@aphyr - May I suggest you go to your local library and access Consumer Reports. This pre-appliance-buying step has served us very well for two decades.
That rules out the ranges with glass cooktops that extend beyond the sides, because that counter flexes and it could crack the glass. Then there's the fact that many ranges are only good to 36.5", not 37", so I'm going to have to build a pair of 3/4" plywood rails and mount them to the floor so the range can sit on that. Then I enter the hellscape of online appliance reviews which is essentially a mass of LLMs citing each other and a few brave souls (I hope) on Reddit who actually cook.
@aphyr ugh I'm going through this, I want to replace my freestanding range with a slide-in but I need to get the gas line moved
and the reviews? don't get me started on the reviews. Consumer Reports is better there.
(also I have a subscription to them so let me know if you want me to look one up)
@aphyr I had to buy a new fridge a few years ago when my LG crapped out and it was a nightmare. (I bought the Costco house brand.)

God you have my utmost sympathies, ranges are one of those things where the 'good ones I have had for 10 years ' means so little because who knows if it's the same product.
I really don't have advice, just hoping it goes okay
@Oggie right! Manufacturer longevity is just garbage now and reputation is largely meaningless
@aphyr This has affected a friend of mine, too.
I think she ended up with the Ikea downdraft model, and modifying things.
@wohali I have been entertaining the idea of asking an ironworker to fabricate a custom duct system
@aphyr at least you probably don't have to deal with z-vent or b-vent which is complex and expensive. basic ventilation with a decent cleanable filter on it is probably for the best
i just have not found that downdraft is sufficient for the extra smoky stuff i tend to do a lot of - wok hei, deep frying, etc.
@aphyr caught fire!!!! That's terrifying! How bad of a fire!!? One of my nightmares tbh, I think I'll clean my oven today 😱
@thickurt Electrical arc; very loud, very bright, burned itself out shortly. The heating element can crack and corrode over time, and when it does, it can arc out.

@aphyr Opportunity to upgrade to induction cooktop / convection oven.
@motodrone77 Yeah, unfortunately there seem to exist no induction ranges with a downdraft vent fan, and I'm working in a very constrained kitchen layout :-(
