@mobilizon is it possible to create an event series? For example, can you create an event that repeats weekly, monthly, etc?
@mobilizon it looks like there is no support for event series or recurring events. This is critical event planning functionality that shouldn't be missing. 😡 It's like having a plane with no wings.
A good work around is to create a serie in any calendar app then import the ICS.
If you want to advertise for all year round activities, you can also create an event from september to june - it will show as an "activitiy" in the search results and on your group page.
Duplicating events is easy, for monthly meeting for instance there is no need for a serie.
A serie would be more handy for the organizer, but might be a pain for visitors if they are predominant in search results.
@mobilizon thank you for the response. That might work for you or me, but it won't work well for regular folks. They're used to being able to do everything from the same interface and service. Plus, it would be a pain for me trying to provide tech support and documentation to other folks.
If you really want Mobilizon to be a replacement for Meetup and other big tech event planning services, I highly recommend you prioritize implementing recurring events. Right now, Mobilizon is probably fine for the occasional and big event but not sufficiently functional for groups that have frequent periodic meetings/events/gatherings.
Regarding search, that sounds like an area where Mobilizon should examine the UI/UX. If users will be overwhelmed by recurring events then perhaps there needs to be an easy way to filter by date range (e.g., only show events for the month of November), collapse recurring event series, and/or exclude results from YXZ group (that has a large number of events).
I am perhaps coming across as harsh but that is partly due to me getting excited then discovering missing core functionality around event planning. The other part is a bit of frustration around FOSS projects that promote themselves as replacements for Big Tech yet they have significant usability or functionality gaps. Having launched six years ago, I feel like that is way more than sufficient time to have implemented recurring events and events series.
@seanm This frustration is legitimate—and widely shared. Unlike Meetup, Mobilizon has not been funded thanks to business angels and does not (yet?) have sufficient funding to hire an employee.
It’s a very different, collective adventure, to which everyone can contribute according to their means, whether technical or financial, or by adding events to Mobilizon and spreading the word around them. There are also calls for help regularly on https://framacolibri.org/c/mobilizon/39
@seanm For technical contributions, I wouldn't recommend submitting a MR for recurring events, it's too much redesign, but rather explore small or cosmetic issues. It improves the product while lightening the load on the lead developers.
@mobilizon how is localization handled? I took a look at Mobilizon USA and its search functionality was using metric. Is this something that is statically configured on the server/instance or is it able to follow a client's localization? I'm assuming maybe the former? Definitely not the later because my system should be requesting "freedom" units (i.e., Imperial miles, etc).
@seanm Only metric system is supported indeed. Thanks for making us aware of this limitation, which had not been highlighted before.
@mobilizon for additional context, I'm part of a group that has a lot of repeating events. Asking them or a moderator to create 52 individual events would not be ideal or appreciated.
And, is it possible to customize individual events that are part of a series? For example, maybe there is a weekly event that coincides with a holiday so the organizer wants to add, "dress up in the spirit of XYZ holiday."
