Seeing all the Linux chatter today... Some thoughts I want to reiterate:
Primarily that I wish to see drivers implemented outside of any particular kernel project! I'm not talking software architecture (like switching to a micro-kernel, though that could be good) but rather organizational structure.
FOSS is at its best when its a massive suite of loosely-coordinate projects, its at its worst when we're lining up behind figure heads!
I could complain about CPU architecture, but I like repair!
@alcinnz Drivers living only inside the kernel was a deliberate choice made by Linus, or rather it is the direct consequence of his choice to deliberately not have any guarantees of interface stability within the kernel.
Incidentally my complaint about mainstream CPU architecture is with their native security model. They put a lot of responsibility off onto "kernel-space", and in turn the techbro headed project typically running there!
I'd like to see CPUs which offered cheap IPC & could deliver I/O directly to user-space drivers. That is: The basics of a micro-kernel as part of the hardware!
And I've got wilder ideas for CPUs!
Then again... I don't want to throw out the computers we already have...

iirc, NetBSD's drivers can be run in both kernel space and user space. The user space way is done with their "rump kernel" thing.
