I continue to maintain that we really need multitenant systems in the fediverse.
Wait, hear me out.
_Everything_ is cheaper at scale. Having a bunch of people pay individually—in both server costs and time spent—in order to maintain small individualized instances is simply not sustainable and cannot be considered as the entry price to the fediverse.
So people naturally congregate to large instances. Infosec.exchange, hachyderm, mastodon.social.
But in a true multitenant setup having your own little identity and domain for a few friends is easy. Moving it between servers is easy. All while not having to deal with the massive administrative and IT headache that is a modern server infrastructure.
This is also cheaper. Ingress and egress become essentially free within the same server network. Even if you don't "cheat" and do an end-runaround of the API layer entirely—which you can do—it still stays entirely within one ecosystem and thus will incur minimal costs.
CDNs are easy. Data storage is easy. Batch processing becomes even more important but also more impactful.
There's a lot of work to get between A and B and several decisions need to be revisited along the way, but I still think it is the best route forward.
At least on days where I haven't completely given up and decided that I would rather be doing anything else.
@hrefna I think that would be a great idea.
