"AI" is a failed technology, in the sense that it's neither fit for purpose, nor a likely path to its stated end goal of "AGI", but a lot of people's profits currently depend on pretending it's not. I am curious to see how long the hype will last once the Nvidia ouroboros ends and money stops being pumped into marketing.
@Gargron interesting times. Will the bubble burst? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
@Gargron There's an old saying amonst traders: "The markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent." When the bubble bursts, the pain will be inflicted from the bottom up.
This is what happens when a #bubble like this bursts.

Tricky to concisely summarize the videos therein, but the YouTuber does an excellent job, using the UK railroad boom as an example.
It doesn’t seem like there’s any pathway to profitability. These guys are living in denial after epic level of Nepo baby money fire storm.
They all believe they could smother the problem in money and they would come out on top. This is how they usually operate so arguably it’s understandable why they went this way.
They are also insane
About a week and a half, then it all collapses. I mean, /all/. This bubble is 3x the size of 2k8's housing bubble and even more fraudulent.
@Gargron this got boosted into my timeline.
You are conflating some llms with the umbrella of ai technologies in an apparent reaction to how those companies train and market their llms.
The problem isn't the technology. It's people who are lumped up in trenchcoats of corporations.
Be critical, but be accurate. You're half there.
@knowprose I am not conflating anything, I use punctuation purposefully.
@Gargron you're conflating a group of technologies with one part of that group.
But I see you've decided to be irksome. Oh well.
@Gargron hype over substance; what everyone forgets is garbage-in-garbage-out. So much context is now AI generated that models are overfitting.
@Gargron Bare minimum, it's an effective front for the wealthiest Tech Bros to corner vital root infrastructure, to squeeze more Capitalist greed out of the 99%.
It's become child's play for them.
@Gargron I like to ask pro-AI folks, "Where is your closest data center?" "How many acres of land did it use?" and "How much electricity will it consume?"
Many will not know the answers.
Here is a drone fly-over of a data center that's currently under construction and about 30 minutes from me. It answers many of the details everyone should be familiar with, whether you live by one, or simply utilize the technology.

@Gargron by “AI” do you mean the current LLM/GPT nonsense?
While intelligence is never artificial, machines don’t actually learn, and the term “artificial intelligence” was coined in the 1950s to get grant money from intelligence agencies, the body of work marketed as “AI” has produced some useful heuristics and algorithms. LLM/GPT is *not* an example of the good stuff; ethically and climate-wise it’s horrific.
Since 1988, I’ve hoped for good things from causal inference. Still waiting
@Gargron
They'll only stop once they've persuaded enough ordinary investors to buy in that the AI jerks in charge can cash out and leave the system to crash on top of people who can't afford it, or be bailed out by governments, sadly...
@Gargron I see more and more coders convinced they must use it. I wonder about the long term effects across the industry when products become a black box managed by Claude in a few years. I am also curious how it will all play out!
@Gargron AI (note the lack of quotes) has been around since the 50s and has produced many successes; such as the machine vision software that makes pick and place robots possible. Presuming you mean LLMs by the quotes, then you are right. LLMs are a dead end on the path to AGI.
But machine learning (ML) is only one part of AI and LLMs are only one product of ML. Perhaps the eventual failure of LLMs will lead to a 2nd AI winter but non-LLM AI will continue to make progress.
@MartyFouts We're in agreement.
@Gargron The business case for building a superhuman AI never really stood up: https://findthethread.blog/Artificial-Investment/
On the other hand once the worst of the hype fades, there is value there that can be salvaged. We saw this cycle play out with drones, 3D printing, and even (Cthulhu help us all) blockchains.
