I’ve posted this before but uh..
Do you know you can use Mastodon (or any other Fedi software) also as private server for you and your friends?
By simply turning off federation and making everything private you can turn a public federated server into a private replacement for big tech chat apps for example
My two best friends and me have one for some time now where we keep in toch and share our lives with each other♥️
@stux a splatoon roleplay (discord) server i used to be active in had a channel meant for in character social media posts, and when i first joined here one of my first thoughts was "i wonder if you could use mastodon for that" lol
much more niche use case I'm sure, but i think it'd be neat 🙂↕️
@stux "Let's share our lives." Poor things, they don't even have lives of their own.
@stux Indeed. I found mastodon to be resource hungry, therefore I am trying out snac (https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2) as my private fedi server. It been pretty good so far. Bonus: snac has an option for turning on Mastodon API compatibility; which I have not tried yet, if it works as described, that would great and if you already have a mastodon client \o/ 🕺
@stux i'd guessed as much, might get a rasp-pi instance up just to play with...
@stux There's also this: https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown which is for closed groups.
I've not tried it myself, but sounds interesting.
In theory you could even host it from your local PC and allow only friends access via certain ways!
No worries about disk usage since it does not federate and only stores what you and your friends post 👌
Install Fedizen

@stux
Some Fedi software (but not Mastodon) supports marking posts as local-only. Then you can run a server for your friends, talk to each other privately, and also talk to people on other servers.
