This is one of the dumbest fediverse server rules I have seen. Equating politics and religion and discouraging people to speak up about injustice because it might make others feel uncomfortable ("plaster it in other people's faces") is such a stupidly privileged thing to do. This rule says a lot about the people running the server.
@jaz public dunking is constructive in nature
@jaz I appreciate you weighing in but I don't know why me having this opinion is "unseemly." You know that I know that moderation is hard. I don't believe making "politics" invisible by policy somehow makes moderation easier, however. [1/2]
@ilumium the opinion is not unseemly; the specificity of calling out a volunteer hobbyist who likely does not have your years of experience and subject matter expertise for a specific rule in a relatively identifiable manner is.
I'll add, you have ten times more followers than this server has active users. Your reach is ten times the reach of this rule.
@jaz The goal of my post was not to debate the specific server's admins. I have seen this kind of rule elsewhere and don't have the energy to convince every single one of them.
But I do wish to highlight to the wider Fedi (read: my followers) that I find these kind of rules highly problematic. So far I fail to see why this would be an issue. [2/2]
N.B. to all my followers (and this should go without saying): Do not harass any server admins just because you dislike their server's rules.
@ilumium This is why we work on shared best practice and put in the time and resources to providing education, convening and resources.
Expecting the 50,000 people currently operating federating software to be instant experts on content moderation, human rights, civil liberties, is not going to end well.
But for those of us in a position to help improve things, let's do that constructively.
@ilumium absolutely dumb take considering you have to opt in for such content from other people. So it is entirely up to Karen not to follow me.
@peteriskrisjanis @ilumium There are still a bunch of Karens who deem the local/federated feeds something of value they want to curate rather than a mistake to bury.
@ilumium It's one thing to see this kind of comment from a random drive-by - but this is unseemly coming from you and your experience/position.
Moderating is hard, unpaid, and creates a ton of conflict.
Calling out this small, hobbyist regional node in this manner is not how we grow and sustain an independent Web, and most certainly is not how we support and improve the network content moderation landscape.
Please consider offering constructive dialogue directly rather than public dunking.
