Things will not get better unless I and you and we put serious effort into making things get better.
Step the slightest bit out of line, even apparently as a white guy (!) voting on a private member’s bill (!!), and you get punished in Parliamentary (Sean Casey).
Mark Carney has done a successful corporate takeover of the Canadian government, to Stephen Harper’s absolute delight.
And now they’re using every tactic in the Parliamentary book to refuse to hear from people who oppose them.
This is not the purpose of elected officials.
A couple weeks ago, seniors traveled from across Canada, asking to meet with the Prime Minister to express their concerns about the accelerating climate crisis and the future.
https://seniorsclimatewitness.ca
They had three reasonable requests, from the perspective of long-lived constituents who want there to be breathable air and other human rights for their children and grandchildren as well:
1. Respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and uphold Canada's commitments to reconciliation, including ensuring that Indigenous rights and leadership are central to decisions affecting the lands and waters.
2. End subsidies and support for new fossil fuel exploration, pipelines, and related infrastructure, and reaffirm Canada's commitment to meeting its climate targets by investing instead to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate resilience.
3. Meet with representatives of Seniors' Climate Witness and people directly affected by wildfires—including those joining virtually—to hear their experiences and discuss how Canada can better protect present and future generations.
Instead of getting a meeting with elected officials, the seniors got arrested.
@Cassandra We were so afraid of a Poilievre Conservative government that we put the corporations in charge. Not realizing that the Carney Liberals were just the Conservative party of yesteryear except without the Reform style racism and transphobia.
ugh.
If we manage to survive another two years in Canada without the entirety of our national infrastructure being privatized it will be a miracle.
