problem with AI discourse is we're trying to use a technical conversation, where we analyse the development and operation of a technology, to discuss people. the real topic is the people: the people that make or use 'AI'. we're trying to understand them. we didn't realize there were people like this. but now we've discovered that there are, so we're trying to figure it out. via debate and insult, we're trying to work out what the fuck is going on with these people. not the technology, the people
I do work for a big corporate who massively restricts internet access from within their building.
Your Copilot instance has access to the full internet, but. you do not.
This is how copilot adds value for them.
It reminds me of that hypothetical of if you could plug your brain into a machine which would give you a simulation of the perfect life while you lie slowly dying in a sealed chamber in reality.
For everyone who would find that existence meaningless and empty, there are people who say "Sign me up"!
Those people are the ones who want to be told they're geniuses and be able to create great works at the touch of a button while their brain turns to soup.
@jk some of the people loves it coz they create alt right shitposts with it.
@jk i try to be skeptical of sweeping generalizations of society and i may have the direction of causation wrong, but i really do feel like the rise of right-wing trumpy politics has created a broad permission structure for the adoption of generative AI. the zeitgeist is currently "only cucks give a shit about the consequences of their actions beyond immediate gratification" and it's so pervasive that even your average center left liberal demonstrates no shame at joining in on the fun

Tangentially, I've noticed a few times that the thing that makes a lot of LLM technology seem revolutionary is a massive relaxing of standards by the people in charge.
At work we used to have useful deterministic chat bots that could do a bunch of useful tasks without having to be on a secure machine. Security decided that was not ok and shut them down then a few years later, someone rolled out an LLM powered chat bot that did all of those things and more with a lot of fanfare.
the technology really doesn't matter so much as the fact that it has exposed a difference in values between people. it has created multiple incompatible worlds, which were possibly always there, but only in theory. it has made those hypotheticals into real choices. it's forced us to all sit down and actually choose. except it's not a free choice, it's not a consumer choice like which toothpaste to buy. it's a choice like "do i avenge my father by killing the man who killed him" kind of choice
@jk Also reminiscent of the social divide caused by covid19 and the masking debate... Those fast paced mind splitting events might very well be a sign of current times.
@jk the gift of chatGPT to sophists broke some multiverse boundary.
We see how little respect a vast majority of people had for creativity, facts or thinking.
I mean... In the ancient past, before 2023, while doing thinking job for customers... One could have had the illusion that efforts meant something.
Now you see people getting equivalent satisfaction with randomly generated shit that looks the same. They cant tell the difference.
The thing is: maybe they never cared. But it wasnt that harmful because some of us cared. And the illusion of a reciprocal care was enough.
@jk it's like that but if avenging your father required you to do absolutely nothing. just don't go to the casino. the owner, who killed your father, is facing bankruptcy and pissed off the mafia and will get what he deserves as long as you don't give him your custom. oh my god, you're still going to the casino aren't you. we're doomed.
@jk That question turned Inigo Montoya from a drunkard into the world's best sword fighter. Just sayin'
@jk the fucking people
