merephone news: I figured out (with @fast_code_r_us 's help) why wasn't getting my tweaked output onscreen: I was missing a method call!
Now I don't know why it wasn't working before... Oh well!
The theory is I was telling the screen's microcontroller to output what was in its framebuffer, but I wasn't transferring my microcontroller's framebuffer over to it.
I unplugged my screen to show my success to my dad as he was heading out. Its cool that I can do that!

Also I've decided to change the name for this project. Previously I've been calling it "LuddPhone" but I wasn't entirely happy with that name.
At @nev 's suggestion I'm now calling it "merephone", I'm liking this name better!
As in "merely a phone". Or I like the fact that it sounds similar to "herephone", not that I like the name "herephone".
Next up: Upgrade the text rendering! Now that I see that a small font works well enough for prototyping.
