https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/technology/ai/playground-experimental-gaming-platform they're gonna try to make the same bad arguments with this that they made for illustration, music, film, and creative writing and please take this veteran game developer's word that this is all a big load of shit. trash, but diametrically opposite the beautiful interesting trash that game creators, novice and experts alike, make when they think thoughts and pour their life experiences into something that communicates some piece of their humanity to the rest of us.

also, let's be real here, the barriers to entry to go from having a game idea to creating it are *ludicrously low* compared to even two decades ago. millions of people have dinked around with cool fun hyper-accessible tools, and more are being made all the time. what google is selling here is a way to create a shaky semblance of particular *types* of commercially legible game, that the world already has a lot of - an infinitesimal % of the total creative possibilities of the medium.
and yeah, learning game creation tools is a barrier to entry. and i differ from a few other AI critics in that i don't personally believe barriers to entry, and struggle more generally, is inherently ennobling or necessary for the creation of art. i want to devote as much of my remaining games career as i can to easing those barriers and burdens (technically, socially, politically, all).
google's nonsense here is, obviously, not a reasonable or humane way to do any of that.
