"The only thing left is taste", says tasteless and bland article which sounds like everything else right now
You definitely don't acquire, develop, refine taste through experience, failure, experimentation. That's just a bonkers idea
I don't mean to be mean, I'm glad the author started to realize their mistakes, but this comment on lobste.rs where the author realizes oh no, actually their writing *has* become bland because they've been spending all this time just talking to agents and now they sound like one, is just the most perfect thing you can read given the context imo https://lobste.rs/s/4qfkrz/taste_is_all_s_left#c_av5d9g
The best way to acquire taste is to mine from the efforts of people who did go through all the hard efforts to develop taste. And at that point you should mock them relentlessly for still "doing things the hard way". Then you can wonder why everything is getting so boring. Why is it happening
Taste is what drives you. But you used to have to go through years of not being able to fulfill the things you wanted to do, just ask Ira Glass. The cost of producing things is now zero, so it's just taste. Where do you get taste? Maybe you're born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline
