Interesting, the SmartWool socks I bought to replace the wearing out REI socks already seeing quite a bit of wear. Maybe will buy a batch of Darn Tough socks and see how they do. (hike everyday, bicycle in them, etc... hard on my socks). The last pairs of SmartWool I had are still going strong, just not the new ones. 🤔
6 months later, first hole in the Darn Tough's (side, not bottom). Do I fix it myself or send them in? #socks #darntoughs
send them in. darn tough are high quality and durable. i'd guess they'd replace them.
@ai6yr I would try to fix myself first because I've never learned how to darn socks...then send it back if I don't like the results!

(definitely not the longest lasting socks I have owned, but better than current Smartwool socks)

@ai6yr I've been using darn tough socks for all over a decade. Never had issue with returns when they get a hole. Highly recommended.
@ai6yr i just blew the heel out of my last of my original smartwools from high school. Sad day. The new ones just aren’t the same.
@ai6yr They replaced pair of mine, no questions asked. Only one pair has worn oddly. All the rest are still going strong.
Dunno how this even happens. #socks
@ai6yr What I just can't understand is why on a good pair of socks one heel wears thru completely and the other heel is like new. I believe the socks are randomly assigned to left or right foot and thus they should wear evenly?
I don't think wear is linear, once a sock starts to wear it goes down hill fast.
I always assume that they get worn an uneven number of times. I often by multiples of socks so there's a chance that out of 4 identical socks, one sock always gets the luck of the draw and is worn 3x more than the others three.
One getting washed as a ball, can change wear patterns. Also dirt, one hike with a dirty heel can do a lot of damage.
@MCDuncanLab @TStehle Yeah, that is what I have found... when it starts getting a hole, the sock integrity is likely compromised. I had darned a bunch a year back and every one I darned got a new hole or two somewhere else!!!
@ai6yr @MCDuncanLab @TStehle Just keep darning them! Thats what I do! Soon enough you'll have socks that are more darning than knitting!
I have some socks I have had over a decade at this point. (My friends think it is all quite silly.)
I darned for a while, but the starting socks were cheap so it was a losing battle. Plus they lost their elasticity so they'd sag or ball up in the shoe so the problem was that and not holes. (Don't know if there's a way to mend saggy cheap socks)
I bought nice socks and even with the cat occasionally pulling a thread out of place, I've yet to have to darn them.
New Darn Toughs from Campmor arrived yesterday. First test hike on the trails was very positive this morning. Will see how they stand up to washing and high usage. Much denser weave than the Smartwools I have been wearing, the supposed mid weight version I purchased not as thick as the mid weight Smartwool. #socks
