Interesting, the SmartWool socks I bought to replace the wearing out REI socks already seeing quite a bit of wear. Maybe will buy a batch of Darn Tough socks and see how they do. (hike everyday, bicycle in them, etc... hard on my socks). The last pairs of SmartWool I had are still going strong, just not the new ones. 🤔
6 months later, first hole in the Darn Tough's (side, not bottom). Do I fix it myself or send them in? #socks #darntoughs
send them in. darn tough are high quality and durable. i'd guess they'd replace them.
@ai6yr I would try to fix myself first because I've never learned how to darn socks...then send it back if I don't like the results!
"Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life
If these aren’t the longest lasting socks you’ve ever owned, you can return them to us for another pair. No receipt needed, just the pair in question."
(definitely not the longest lasting socks I have owned, but better than current Smartwool socks)

@ai6yr I've been using darn tough socks for all over a decade. Never had issue with returns when they get a hole. Highly recommended.
@ai6yr i just blew the heel out of my last of my original smartwools from high school. Sad day. The new ones just aren’t the same.
@ai6yr They replaced pair of mine, no questions asked. Only one pair has worn oddly. All the rest are still going strong.
Dunno how this even happens. #socks
@ai6yr Do you have studs on your bike pedals (common on mountain bike pedals, for example). If so those will readily put holes in your socks just like that, even from casual contact.
@pmonks Yeah, but don't contact my legs ever. More likely a branch snagged on it while hiking. 🤔 I'll wash them and then send them in.
@patmikemid @ai6yr I wear long knee pads that also cover my shins for this reason. Been snakebit too many times.
@pmonks @patmikemid Ah, I don't do any REAL mountain biking, I just bicycle to the store or the library, lol.
@ai6yr @patmikemid You should try it! One of my riding buddies just broke his arm on a trail he’d ridden a thousand times!! #GoodTimes #AgeAppropriateActivities
@pmonks @patmikemid LOL I nearly killed myself as a kid in a MTB race, ambulance ride, cracked the helmet in half, broke my collar bone, plentiful road rash. Decided that was not the activity for me. Plus, my son is a paramedic and works on the rescue copter, and most weekends are spent dealing with MTB riders who have really messed themselves up. More than a few likely paralyzed for life due to back injuries. So... I know my limits. (I am also tall and top heavy. 6ft+ so... it helps to be short and compact, IMHO, lol)
@ai6yr @patmikemid But you could be supporting your son’s employment! Stop being selfish and get out there and pretend you’re 16 again!!
@pmonks @patmikemid 😂 Amusingly, he doesn't get paid for working on the copter, it's a volunteer position. 🤔 (which is the case in many areas around here... search and rescue, even the medical positions, all volunteer... I guess you pay for the privilege of that adrenaline high)
@ai6yr @pmonks @patmikemid
local search and rescue groups are volunteer here
the only pros are the national/regional urban search and rescue teams.
New Darn Toughs from Campmor arrived yesterday. First test hike on the trails was very positive this morning. Will see how they stand up to washing and high usage. Much denser weave than the Smartwools I have been wearing, the supposed mid weight version I purchased not as thick as the mid weight Smartwool. #socks
