Linux Mint Cinnamon oder elementaryOS?

It’s not my main laptop, I might want to try to play some games on it (not sure yet), I would love to have a mail and calendar app that work well together, things looking good and not being too difficult is important to me. I have used Linux quite a lot in the past though and am not a beginner, but also not someone who wants to get deep into all the configurations and OS details and I prefer stuff mostly working out of the box if I’m happy with default settings

Linux Mint

100%

ElementaryOS

Top pick: Linux Mint 100%

@christin I haven’t included it in the list because i wasn’t too much of a fan of pacman/aur when i used Manjaro in the past. And i haven’t really found out what CachyOS stance is on LLMs, do you know more about that?

@luce there is no AI at all in CachyOS and I'm quiet sure, that there is no AI integration planned.

@christin @luce as someone that has mint and cachy on dualboot:

Cachy ist a lot more fickle/prone to bs that you have to fix, but games run hella fast.
I can see significant differences in performance playing the same games in cachy and mint. On the other hand cachy "tamagochied" itself twice in the last year.

Mint is a tad bit slower but it is absolutely reliable

Car comparison:
Mint: reliable family car
Cachy: highly specialized racecar

@triplef @christin Interesting, thanks! What do you mean by “tamagochied”?

@luce @christin it's a reference to the meme that arch linux is just an it tamagochi, meaning that you have to take regular actions to prevent your system from dying.

My cachy os had two separate occasions where it just couldn't boot. The first time I just wiped the whole cachy part of my pc and reinstalled (I'm fairly new to Linux), the second time I managed to save my system via a Bootstick and and accessing my system via that to update it.

I have to disagree with the tamagotchi thing 😄 My CachyOS has been running for two years now and it's been rock solid. Every single update went through without issues. I install and remove new stuff on it daily, compile things, code, work on it, play games like Minecraft or Star Citizen and more, also from Steam... – and I haven't had one single problem or had to fiddle with anything. Not once.

So for me it's not a tamagotchi at all, it's just a really fast daily driver. Boot problems like that usually have a specific cause (dual boot, bootloader, interrupted update…), not "Cachy just does that".

But well... I'm surely not new to linux at all. I'm using linux only since over 20 years now. So maybe this is the reason? :-P
