I've often suspected that auto-complete was used as a subtle/shadow form of semi-censorship, and now comes evidence from the auto-complete function on the Apple iPhone that confirms exactly that suspicion... anyone who thinks this issue is limited to Apple, has not been paying attention to the politics & behaviour of Big Tech.
The question is *which* phrases are allowed/disallowed (because judging your words is what the tech *does* if you use it) and do they show bias? For example: are you unable to type “male chauvinist pig” but able to get the software’s help with “commie feminist pig”. Obviously*I* don’t know the balance because I haven’t done an analysis of the 10,000 words and phrases, but based on this report I sure have my suspicions.
@DavidM_yeg @ChrisMayLA6 the inevitable outcome is words being added in response to complaints which is going to do the normal reinforcement of bias even without any corporate malfeasance.
Though honestly “censorship” being equated with having to type some words out seems a bit “give me convenience or give me death”.
@Colman @DavidM_yeg @ChrisMayLA6 I understand why you're saying that, and you're right that it's not a ban. Still, there's a clear progression from inconvenience to deterrence to forbiddance that can reasonably be described as a continuum of censorship.
@ChrisMayLA6 censorship or a user interface issue? Accidentally sending autocorrected text is rife especially for the middle aged not wearing their glasses. Telling your boss he’s a chauvinist (which it happily just swiped, by the way) is often not optimal.”, even accidentally.
