If you write CSS, have a question for you. Do you know what “system colors” are? Do you think about how your code interacts with them?
I know what they are.
I am given a design to build.
I make sure all the system colors are overridden, so that the page looks the way it was designed.
@jensimmons which question should I answer with the poll? 🙃
Yes I know what they are.
No, or at least not until I need to check how the whole thing behaves. Not proud of that one, though.
@jensimmons I'm aware of them, but I admit I tend to write them off and just "do my own design" on the web. I've only now (seeing your post) am playing with it, and for the first time realizing I can use accentColor in conjunction with relative color or color-mix... some interesting possibilities there 🤔
I ask because in thinking about how to teach more developers how to implement your own custom dark mode support… system colors comes up right away. When I was a developer I had no clue what was actually going on (also it probably didn’t work the modern way yet). I’m guessing many devs still don’t. It’s not obvious what’s up with how the browser creates default background & text colors and more.
@jensimmons I think advice on that would be awesome. I must admit I have no idea how I'd make a stylesheet adapt to a system color scheme and I can't be the only one.
@jensimmons I didn't know much about them... still don't know everything... but they come up a lot when supporting High Contrast Mode. So I wish they were more well-known and discussed personally.
`currentColor` was a major unlock for working with SVG. i'd love `currentBackgroundColor` to match it.
@davatron5000 Yeah, we need some sort of current background color to use for new UA styles for form controls. It came up as my colleagues & I were proposing styles for <select> (so the picker can have a default background that inherits from author styles). So we are inventing it! Stay tuned!
@jensimmons at my last place, we used them for high contrast mode. That is the only time I can think of and it was less about dark mode and more of an accessibility solution. Depending on what my next role is, I would do something similar.
@jensimmons I'm aware of system colors, but I have to admit I don't really pay much attention to them in practice. The closest I come to working with them is probably when optimizing my UIs for forced colors mode. But even then, I usually manage just fine without explicitly using them.
@jensimmons I know what they are, but I rarely consider their usage or impact. 🤔
@jensimmons Why, is Safari considering a forced-colors mode after introducing adaptive dark mode? 😉
@jensimmons I know what they are, but I often only get to use them in my personal projects. I wish it were both more common and more straightforward for web apps to match the appearances of native apps, but right now, that still requires additional libraries.
