wellp had a chat with one of the folks at Jewish Family Services and it seems that I once again fall into a gap when it comes to getting help. but she's got some other ideas that she'll check up on for me
they have services for the elderly and they have services for folks with severe cognitive impairments, but not things for people who are only middle-aged and just severely chronically ill but not, like, end-of-life
like the problem is that I am disabled but not in a way that makes Social Security believe me to be eligible to receive disability, and I have a decent amount of money but no income, and paying out-of-pocket for the sorts of help that would benefit me would very quickly make me *not* have a decent amount of money, because the various help things I *do* have access to are overpriced gig economy shit that is about convenience rather than need
and all of the public or subsidized services have conditions that prevent me from accessing them
like I live right next to a bus stop that does technically have active service, but it's not USEFUL service for what I need, and getting to the closest bus stop that's actually useful takes away all of the energy I need to actually take part in the thing I was trying to get to in the first place, but being next to an active bus stop makes me ineligible for KC Metro's transit assistance
and not having a federal disability determination prevents me from making use of the various programs for getting in-home support, like they don't even let me pay out of pocket for it, I just Cannot Get It. and my alternatives are paying for vastly overpriced cleaning services or Taskrabbit or whatever.
and there is no service around here where someone will drive me to Costco and help me shop under my own direction, the closest is shit like Instacart where it's just shitty expensive delivery.
and as usual like, yeah I did in fact apply for disability years ago and it's been stuck in adjudication and bureaucracy, and yep I do indeed have an attorney that I'm working with, but the process is slow and broken
