one thing i really like about phpunit now in 2026 is the #[Test] annotation. because of it i can:
1) resume naming the test methods how i wanted to begin with.
2) pre-write these test methods and just not include the #[Test] attribute until ready. better than borking the method name.
it has provided a lot of extra freedom that allows me to almost enjoy testing for the first time in 26 years. yes, because the test suite was almost like rails in opinions, was a big reason i hated doing it.
@ramsey no sir i was 100% for them from day one. however i prefer to call them annotations because that is the actual established metaprogramming word since back when java was the only place that had them. i was super active back when we were debating the syntax for them.
my dream is to 100% eliminate phpdoc with them. because phpdoc is what hate.
@bobmagicii PHP followed Rust and C# with the style and name of its “attributes.” I’m not sure why they didn’t call them “annotations.”
@ramsey im more chill with the attribute syntax than i am with the namespace escape i mean backslash. the namespace delimiter of \ i will take that grudge beyond the grave as an angsty spirit haunting those who remain.
