github has added a "sync fork" button to the UI when you are looking at a repo you control which is a fork of someone else's repo. that's… that's actually a nice feature. that's the first feature github as added in as long as i can remember that makes me go "this makes the site better" instead of "this makes the site worse". i guess if i spend this much time complaining about software i should point it out if software does something right. for once. ever
@mcc stacked pull requests are pretty nice too. We implemented something like that in Launchpad about 20 years ago, so it is nice to see others find the concept useful.
@jamesh I don't know what that is. I guess I've been spending pretty little time on github vs codeberg lately.
@mcc it basically let's you create a second pull request that depends on the first. To create the review diff for the second PR, it uses the target branch with the first PR branch merged as a base.
It's useful if you have a large change that would be easier to review in parts, while not requiring you merge all changes upwards of changes are requested lower in the stack.
@jamesh i see. this is definitely a problem i have encountered more than once with "git forges"
@mcc I think GitHub's new dashboard (currently in preview) is also a change that makes the site better.
It makes it so that the homepage shows issues & pull requests you've recently interacted with.
i attempted to make this post last night but it went unmade until today because last night mastodon only threw 503s when i tried to post to it. this is because software does not work
@mcc hasn't this feature existed for a while now? Also cf the "rebase PR over main" UI button, which works even for a fork.
