Someone does not know many archaeologists. Or geologists. Or any field that does lots of field work.
I think he was being just a touch sarcastic. Or charitable in service of a better take down.
There has also lately been an effort by geologists to encourage more professional behavior and less heavy drinking while at field camp.
I was once at a graph theory conference where there were fisticuffs! A man was punched!

We did get home. And I filed a complaint on his behalf with the college where the punching professor worked.
I think it was about romance maybe.
Nothing came of it, but I was a detached third party with no ambitions in their world and my emails describing what he did are archived in many places.
I hope it was at least embarrassing.
Frankly it kind of put me off wanting to go for a PhD, getting trapped with a bad advisor? The social complexity the politics? Ugh.
And then the vow of poverty that comes with studying pure mathematics at that level.
I think more than a few math PhD ambitions die on the rocks of "wait, these people would be my colleagues?".
@futurebird well, I wouldn't expect a teacher to get paid much either.
@futurebird I always asume the best representation of academia is the episodes of British murder mysteries involving elaborate and grusome murders of academics over some dispute or another.
