Seems like the reviews are embedded with the map download?
It would have been nice if it were an optional download, like how you can choose which maps should be available offline.

Yes, each ‘region’ map has only it’s own reviews.

Why?
That’s a lot of data that would be potentially unused and some of us has limited space.
That’s text reviews with 1000 symbols limit. Even if you take all reviews on platform you most likely would not even 1 megabyte get, and it is not mentioning compression that then use to store it¯_(ツ)_/¯
All current reviews. There are thousands of locations within each square mile and some cover whole states. It can add up eventually.
It still going to be small, again, it is just a text reviews, no pictures or anything (no comments even) with max of 1000 symbols per review.
Assuming they use utf8 for strings, so the biggest review will take 1 kilobyte at most. Considering most reviews are even less then 2 whole sentences, I doubt it will take much in near… Decade if not more (at which time we would most likely die in world war or something).
If we take around ~6.5k reviews (based on number in an article), it would mean we would have ~6.5 megabytes for entire world at most + some metadata (but we would not, considering most of reviews are really brief, so I would say we would sit around half of that size) + compressed + divided for entire world, so at most we would have shaved maybe up to hundred of kilobytes (in maybe several years if we would even have enough of reviews) per country/region/state, which does not sound a lot, considering it would require quite a lot of effort to reorganise stuff. So eh, I do not know.
Really hope we will be able to review places directly in the app one day. Im not a big fan of MapCompletes UX. This is a really cool feature and I already made some reviews.
Cheers folks - very clearly communicated, appreciate all the work the CoMaps teams are putting in
I should start leaving reviews of random fucking places around my area.
Maybe I’ll start by reviewing the nearby river…
If you are lazy you don’t need write full paragraphs or sentences. Reviews without texts, only clicking stars are allowed.
Okay but like is it a good river?
“The river is nice but the fish are assholes”
I kinda miss being a Google Guide back in the day, this sounds like a fun awesome successor to that 💓
Hope we get support on iOS in not too long too 🤞 (I am aware of the stars in search)
