Aha! I have a vague memory of him telling that story "about that time I got a grant to pay some guy to write a readme file." over lunch at a database conference. Not surprisingly, the topic was the poor state of documentation in modern database efforts.

@ai6yr that was so long ago. 1988? But, if I’m sitting at a bar with a bunch of drunken DBAs, I can usually trot that story out and get a free beer. :)
@ai6yr did it work? I have a vicarious interest but no actual expertise anymore in Postgres. My very tenuous credential in that area is I wrote the first readme file for Postgres when it was a university project and Mike Stonebraker had a grant that required “documentation” so he paid me $1000 to read all the source code and write a readme file. It took 18 months for UC Berkeley to pay me my money.
