Team, what one thing didn't I pack for the field trip to reset the network switch that I'd lost the admin password of?
@futzle A pokey friend is necessary https://toot.cafe/@brad/105132757943422722
@futzle I’ve been there so often, I just attached one to my keyring.
re: SysadminLife vs. field trips
@futzle
As a bonus, you got some red string?
@futzle As a seasoned sysadmin sleuth myself, I'm confused by the lack of “All of the above” as an option, because that would be the obvious choice if I had a trip like this
@alderwick I was actually _prepared_ and only forgot one item.
@futzle USB UART FTDI adapter
@otte_homan Fortunately those days are behind me; all our equipment now has either a USB serial port or an Ethernet management port.
@futzle I have a mightyOhm Geiger tube that spits out UART data every second which I pick up on a UART-FTDI-USB thing into python on a pi into an influxdb and then into gnuplot and pop it here on the Blower every Monday. I wouldn't want to have it any other way. Currently offline while rejigging influx from V1 to V2 (V3 is out but not for pi). Should go back to python 2.7 to stick with the Old Skool vibe, really.
@futzle once drove all the way from socal to the colo in SLC with two DL580s for the warm DR site. forgot the switch.
bought some crap at staples to make crossover cables and called it good.
@futzle the serial to USB adapter and the serial cable (the good light blue one)
@SadKitten Haha yes I have a few of that light blue cable, but this switch doesn’t have a serial management port, I just designate the last Ethernet port VLAN 1 for management.
Well played, readers, you figured out the punchline. Fortunately I was able to steal a pushpin from the production corkboard and the day was saved.
