on some level a touchscreen macbook is probably a good idea, as is a foldable iphone (if it didn’t self-destruct immediately). clearly people did want these things. but … I’m not even sure how to articulate this, but these product concepts just make me feel like apple is out of ideas somehow?
@glyph I'm really tempted to go framework pro with next device... I'm doing nothing on my laptop that requires the mac-ness and I spend way more time terminaling and I really want to do some hyperland ricing on an Arch (no Omarchy) or CachyOS Box
@kjaymiller FYI, vaxry (the hyprland guy) is just as much of a piece of shit as DHH. less powerful perhaps, but so obnoxious that he can no longer collaborate with freedesktop (last I checked, he is still permabanned)
@glyph is there an alternative to hyperland that I can play with... because I more want to play and be creative than be "in the ecosystem" when it comes to computing.
it really was A Choice to launch the new $15,000 laptop with launch wallpaper that looks like the day-1 broken screens of the $2,000 folding phone https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/28/new-macbook-pro-maxed-out-cost/
again I just can’t articulate what is going on here for me. it’s annoying. I feel like if they’d launched with a bold new Yoga-style form factor where they clearly thought really hard about the ergonomics of touch and did something radically different to accommodate it, that would feel less bad? but no it’s just a laptop designed to get greasy and give you gorilla arm. I don’t get it. who is this for exactly?
@glyph I think it’s more that in the Jobs era Apple only entered a segment when they believed they could make a Bold Statement in it. They wanted to bring their A game or not play at all. This meant leaving money on the table occasionally, but Jobs was fine with that, and so were the shareholders; as long as the hits were so enormous, who cared about missed opportunities?
What we’re seeing now feels like a slow reorienting around people who actually mind leaving money on the table, and want to have a product in every market segment, even if they don’t have anything particularly bold or brilliant to fill it with
@glyph I wanted a smaller laptop that the screen could detach and become a touchsreen mac with a cellular connection - that would be my iPad Pro
like there’s nothing i can point to, but it just seems a bit stale. there’s no distinctive apple twist, the foldable has all the same problems as every other foldable. it’s an iphone that looks like every other iphone but you can fold it now, the macbook looks the same as every other macbook but you can touch it now.
