oh gosh... this "OurTube" vibecoded fediverse video site does not locally cache any media, and it pulls both thumbnails and full video (on hover) as users scroll through the list of (mostly remote) videos. this is going to be a big bandwidth suck for any instances they follow.
@msh have em pay 1994 rates
@scanlime huh, might be worth dusting off the ol’ “no hotlink my stuff plz” brain cells to serve them up some (entirely cached) anti-slop images and videos for every request haha
@arrjay @djsundog so the really annoying part here is the traffic doesn't come from their server it comes from every user, as a fairly anonymous-looking cross-origin browser request (which peertube has to allow for normal federated video stuff to work). that's why if this is abused the only circuit breaker really is to turn off federation and throw anubis on the whole site.
@scanlime wait it starts pulling the _whole video_ on hover in a list view?!
@scanlime gods-a-fucking-bove. What a cursed nightmare piece of software. Maybe someone should push a PR up to set their user agent to something that can be reliably identified and try to disguise it as something else so they take it.
@errant seems broken too, it tries to pull the lowest res video and gets 0 often for audio only
i recommend rejecting their follows and blocking their servers by IP to keep them from interacting at all, but i doubt that'll remove existing videos from the index. if their users (or a similar type of site after this one inevitably gets hacked and dies) become a bandwidth problem i might need to put the whole damn instance behind anubis and give up on fediverse.
@scanlime can we somehow convince their AI agents to pay for the egress charges their suckage incurs upon us, plus some unreasonable markup?
