Why are there "wife guys" but no "husband gals" ?
@futurebird because a man loving his wife is totally gay. I’ve seen screeds on this absurdity. since women are allowed to love their husbands without fear of the gay, I’d say the “husband gals” are the trad wives.
@futurebird I think I kinda knew one of those! Her husband was a quiet, gentle guy with a job that was very low status in their culture. It would be normal (expected, really) for her to constantly complain about his job and him not being “masculine” enough. Instead she (a more outgoing, assertive person) told everyone how hard he worked and how much he loved the kids and how she couldn’t imagine a better husband. People tried to be like “But what about—” and she’d just bulldoze right past them.
@futurebird why gender it when you can just say "spouse gnomes"
@futurebird women are just expected to be husband gals, they don't get any props for it, only boos if they don't do it.
@futurebird According to Urban Dictionary, I know this guy.
"A man whose entire personality revolves around being a married man and perfect partner to his wife. He will constantly name drop his wife, praise her, or champion the sacred unity of marriage even when unprompted. While seemingly genuine in nature, the “Wife Guy” is usually a known cheater who uses his devotion to his wife as a cover for his misdeeds"
I must admit ... I really have know idea what "wife guy" means exactly. I guess like a dude who just likes to go home?
@futurebird Surprised to discover there is a Wikipedia entry for the phrase: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wife_guy
" French chemist Antoine Lavoisier, noted as an early wife guy, with his spouse"
"early wife guy"
TF?
@futurebird @watters Antoine Lavoisier was the first man to love his wife.
@futurebird it's a type of guy who endlessly posts about how awesome (and hot) his wife is, in a way that is transparently not about how awesome she is, but how awesome *he* is for bagging her. It's pretty easy in practice to differentiate these guys from guys who just... like their wives. There are plenty of articles on the subject if you want to dig in more.
@futurebird my impression is it’s a guy who makes his affection for his wife a very prominent part of his public/general personality. Oddly enough I’ve seen it used both positively and negatively.
@futurebird I feel like I don’t even wanna know. (Probably something gross or creepy)
"what heterosexual nonsense" - Me, person who has been married to a guy for like 20 years.
@futurebird same
I heard someone on Fedi say - heteros are not okay
@futurebird I think it specifically entails bragging about the wife and talking about how much he likes his wife. Which sounds normal. Hopefully people like their marital partners
@mcc @futurebird You'd like to think it was normal, but spend any time in a toxic make environment and you'll soon find a bunch of guys who bitch about their wives like it's a sport.
@mcc @futurebird I like the adjective "uxorious", which I heard applied to Charles Pooter from The Diary of a Nobody.
@mcc @futurebird so like...
Gomez Addams
Columbo
(We don't see Columbo getting as excited as Gomez, but then, we only ever see him at work and not at home. He's definitely always thinking about his wife tho)
@futurebird well there are guys and then there are types of guy, right
Presumably those are what they call "trad wife"?
I feel like that is somewhat parallel but not really the true inverse.
The bizarre thing about trad wives is they don't talk about their partners much at all... some of them don't even have one.
It's just "muffins this, flat earth home school that... all day long."
@futurebird @5ciFiGirl ...and then a few years later they announce they're getting divorced (because the kind of man who insists on a trad wife is typically just looking for someone to exploit rather than a partnership with mutual respect)
@futurebird Would Erika Kirk qualify as a "Husband Gal"?
