When faced with so many new names do you do anything to help you remember?
I've taken to warning people up front that it's not gonna happen and it's not personal.
@futurebird
When teaching classes of around 20 students, it always took me several classes to get all the names right. Once I’d got some assignments back and had some class discussions, I could connect personalities and ideas to the names and faces and then they’d stick.
@futurebird
But I learned that for me it’s better not to use any tricks or shortcuts to learn the names because they’d backfire. If I had 70 names to learn, and similar looking students in different classes, at first it helps narrow down the possibilities: that’s either Jen or Beth. But then they’d both get stuck at “either Jen or Beth” long after I’d learned the other names. This was annoying but tolerable if Jen and Beth didn’t know each other or know why I was mixing them up.
I always keep my cards grouped by class.
@futurebird I use mnemonics to try remembering names.
@futurebird I have moderate face blindness, so I will often get names wrong too as it's difficult for me to match the face with the names I've just learned.
If I'm introduced to three or fewer people, there's a slight chance that I can force myself to remember, but any more than that I just straight up tell people that I will get it wrong.
@futurebird notes during the meeting, names listed as others are seated, maybe a comment they made. Is this the same as thinking about it? But it takes many reputations for me to remember a name. Faces I remember but the name that goes with the face…not so much
