What's gonna happen to all those GPUs
@cwebber i wouldn’t be surprised to see them get buried in a landfill et for the atari style
@cwebber as far as Ive seen of these GPUs they all live on rackmount boards and aren't in a useful PC format. I think its gonna be landfill just like with all the bitcoin mining ASICs. wish I was wrong though
@cwebber They'll all go to china as they're server shaped and not consumer shaped ones. Then they'll be remade into consumer grade products in different shapes and forms.
And then you'll be able to order them through ebay, amazon, or aliexpress.
@cwebber I've seen some interesting exploratory work on repurposing GPUs built for AI as scientific computing infra instead. I don't think it'll be a huge component, but I'm hopeful it'll be significant within scientific computing. It has potential.
@cwebber i imagine a lot of the working gpus are going into warehouses owned by amazon and microsoft rather than being actually held by data center spvs that are half or less built.
there's been reporting recently that nvidia is pre-shipping orders to its more reliable customers as the flaky ones continue to fence walk "we still want it but can't use it right now".
"we sold them on to another hardware distributor" seems a pretty easy sell. seems like they'll pop up on the ebay or ali-express grey market eventually, a few at a time.
@cwebber
If by "AI" we mean neat machine learning applications in science: Bring on the inference!
@cwebber I suspect that the economics of electricity will mean that they end up running perhaps 20% of the time i.e. when power is cheap enough and the outside air is cool enough.
I wish it was gamer improvement but yeah no. Zero chance of positive.
@cwebber i would love to scoop a banker's box full of gpus on craigslist for $50 but i know the base situation is landfill and the spicy situation is "they're so broke they can't pay anyone to break down the datacenters so everything just sits there until someone realizes"
@cwebber
The crash will happen when all those GPUs start to burn out and they can't afford to replace them and they can only be sold as scrap because they're all burnt out.
