Haha, crackgate ... surprised pika face
@iamkonstantin M1 Macs are very different internally & OS wise from Intel, so much stuff being moved off chips into the CPU package.
Apple Watch 2015. I don't like it much now, but it's very popular.
@mdhughes @iamkonstantin I agree with the original poster. From the user POV the M1 Mac is really the same product, just updated. It’s still a MacBook, not a whole new product.
@Setok @iamkonstantin It's really not. A bunch of stuff got *MASSIVELY* faster, but you were very limited in RAM initially (now you are again because of modern shit).
That M1 transition was not a clear-cut "same thing but next year's model" choice.
@mdhughes Yeah but the AirPods were after the watch and I’m really focusing on the outer bits - where the pesky humans and their randomness come into contact with the device.
@iamkonstantin People don't buy Apple products for the shell, tho. They buy them for what they can do.
@mdhughes I think it's more about convenience and not having to make too many choices or maybe even just brand loyalty from "the good old days". I don't think many even realise technical capabilities - e.g. "Apple Silicon" and "Photonic Engine" may as well be technobabel from Star Trek.
I don't know, was just a shower thought but it struck me how cult-like the whole situation has become. We are so very far from need -> here is a device that solves that problem.
Actually, what was the last device Apple successfully brought out on a first try?
AirPods back in 2016?
AirTags (2021) not - Apple forgot that stalkers and abusive partners are a thing.
M1 Macbook Air (2020) not - it was technically an existing device that got a new SoC
HomePod (2019) not - Siri, the ring prints …
So… it’s been 10 years since Apple launched a successful new product and somehow people would still pay them a lot of money.
