While I was having fun with selfhosting, I categorized all selfhosting software into 3 categories, and heavily trying to select only cat. 1 or cat. 2 🙂

1st category: software written by greybeards who remember PDP 11, COBOL or ЕС ЭВМ. It has complete set of documentation (including manpages (I mean - real manpages - not some Markdown markup inside the mynewprogram.1 file)), well-written installation instructions; usually user could just install this software from package repositories or in the worst case with ./configure && make && make install and use it without any problems.

2nd category: software written by not so greybeards, but by people who eventually become like them. This software usually has good documentation in one place (usually on the Web), developers knows that there are some industry standards and doing their best to make a software not Linux-specific. It may not exists in package repositories of your OS, but it is relatively easy to build a binary for yourself.

3rd category: nightmare level. Software doesn't exist in package repositories because: "Yooo, we need bleeding edge versions of all libraries and dependencies for sEcUrItY and new FeAtUrEs!!!" - so the only one option to install it - use Docker. Or install a special Linux distribution, created to run this software (like a Home Assistant, lmao).

Installation manual also doesn't exist because: "Just use Docker, YOLO! docker pull ... go brrrr, what is "bare-metal" old man? 😎"

If you try to fuck this, make a little investigation and build this software anyway by yourself - you will found that it requires some obscure python libraries, which requires some obscure Rust things, like leftpad but "memory-safe and blazingly fast", which compiles 1337 hours on your box and doesn't compile at all, because it requires some library with specific version, which was released 0.000001ns ago and couldn't be installed in your system since it conflicts with existing library and breaks some necessary software.

Then you threw computer out of the window 🙂
