Fun fact: the words “fascist” and “fajita” share the same Latin roots. As do “nazi” and “nachos”.
Which doesn’t link EVERY Mexican food to extreme right wing ideology, but it’s still pretty weird that it’s happened twice.

This evokes my favorite conspiracy theory: the “Knights of the Golden Circle” a bunch of pre-civil war morons who dressed up as *literal medieval knights* and tried to invade Mexico to create a slave holding empire - the “golden circle” of the Caribbean.
They even involved future presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth as a contact or possible member.
Maybe that’s where churros come from?
@benpate They look like golden circles to me (although these are technically tejeringos).
@benpate Fajita and fascio, I can see. But nazis and nachos?? Citation needed please!

It is a true fact. I don’t make the rules.
@benpate Hah, I did not know that, thanks!
@benpate I just spent 20 minutes confirming you're 100% correct. Wow.
Now I wonder about churros. The etymology is murky (possibly named after a sheep?) so maybe they're from "kyklos", the Greek for circle, and thus share a root with the Ku Klux Klan...?
