Discord-knowers: if I were to start a Discord server for community engagement on a funded project, are there things worth paying for that make it easier to run/manage a community? AFAICT the paid Discord features are mostly user-side things, I haven’t found anything for better servers, but I might not be looking in the right places.
@mdekstrand @shriramk That's what @SafeguardingResearch is settling on and so far it seems to work alright, functionally. Depending on the community you're working with, be ready for people to say that the visual design is not as consumer-oriented as Discord's. Personally I'm chill with 2010s-era web design, but I could see it scaring off some young'uns.

It's absolutely true that the visual look could use a bit more pizazz. Slack really nails that. It's annoying because I think with 10% more effort they could significantly overhaul the look, and then there would be nothing left to complain about. But the semantics are so much better that I'm quite content with the visuals.
Over on Bsky, @shriramk suggested Zulip, so I’m looking into that too.
