Is it OK to use walled garden social media to promote the Fediverse?
it is a temptation to keep participating in those platforms for other reasons
my 'yes, but' was "as long as that's the way you're participating in those platforms, and not an excuse". Though, I give a bit of leeway for other reasons e.g. family and friends being there.
I should be clear that I'm not a social network purist. I think that using the Fediverse first is best. But I also share life events and family photos on Instagram and Facebook. And I post and support friends and allies on LinkedIn.
This poll came up because I was doing promotion of @swf 's Fediverse Multimedia Grants on my personal feeds and the organization feeds on X, Facebook, Threads, and LinkedIn.
One thing people got outraged about when we launched SWF a couple of years ago was that we had links to our accounts on siloed social media sites from our website. I don't think it's the wrong thing to do, but a lot of people got really upset about it.
@evan yes, but you have to demonstrate loyalty to the fediverse, like with a tattoo or a 1:2 mastodon sculpture
@evan
No ifs or buts.
Going to the Nazi bar for the specific purpose of reducing its patronage is always OK.
@evan@cosocial.ca Yes. Someone has to do that work, and advocacy should never be limited to just our own spaces.
@evan If you don't go to them the odds are they will never find the path out.
@evan I oft think about how in the heyday of status.net, for which those of us in the know remember as an amazing piece of work you did, that Twitter suddenly decided to dismantle the two way bridge.
I see folks coming through to #Fediverse from #BlueSky and I smh.
I came back to microblogging (I refuse to call it social media π΄) precisely because Fediverse reached the dream you reached for in status.net. Let's push to leave the rest behind.
(Also thinking about how Trump uses Mastodon).
@evan I would suggest that if you still have a walled garden social media account you are somewhat obligated to talk about federated social media there sometimes. The medium is the message.
@evan Yeah, it's a great way to test how open other social networks are towards competition/collaboration. And perhaps necessary to let people within those walled gardens know that we're here :)
@evan
I sometimes regret that I killed my Facebook account, so I can't post all my fediverse ads into groups anymore...
Is it okay? Absolutely.
Is it worth my time..? IDK. I pretty much stopped using my Facebook account.
@evan Social media is fundamentaly about the users. Even on other platforms they still matter. I like to think that the entire architecture behind the fediverse ultimately is set for the users / potential users and also that social media, as a whole, reflects the real world, where we have to learn to collaborate, tolerate and understand everyone. I know the topic is more nuanced and complex, but in a nutshell it sounds like that, at least to aspire to.
Hey, all. I think the answer here is yes, but it is a temptation to keep participating in those platforms for other reasons. If you're there to promote the Fediverse, and a funny meme goes by, it can be hard to remember to stay focused.
